On Hacker News, one traveller described using ChatGPT to translate a Japanese menu into romaji and English, explain the difference between two Turkish yoghurt dishes, and talk them through basic Tagalog phrases by voice while walking around Manila.
Here's a photo of a menu in [LANGUAGE]. Translate each dish into English, show how to pronounce it in [ROMAN LETTERS/PHONETICS], and briefly explain what it is. Flag anything containing [ALLERGENS OR FOODS I AVOID]. Then teach me how to order [DISH] politely.
Planning Key West, a Kiplinger writer found a simple 'two-day itinerary' prompt gave generic tourist picks. Adding details such as 'focus on water activities, include a ghost tour, build in hotel breaks, no breakfast' produced plans that felt like hers, though everything still needed checking.
Create a [NUMBER]-day itinerary for [DESTINATION]. The atmosphere I want: [E.G. RELAXED, OUTDOORSY]. Must include: [E.G. A GHOST TOUR]. Focus on: [E.G. WATER ACTIVITIES]. Build in: [E.G. AN AFTERNOON BREAK AT THE HOTEL]. Skip: [E.G. BREAKFAST PLANS, BUSY NIGHTLIFE]. Avoid the obvious top-ten list where you can and tell me why each pick suits me.
A travel writer used ChatGPT instead of hours of reading before a Door County trip: which attractions people call overrated, which are worth the crowds, and which town suits her. It recommended two restaurants that had closed, but she felt confident enough to book a rental that night.
I'm going to [DESTINATION] in [MONTH]. Give me the lay of the land: which popular attractions are often called overrated and which are worth the crowds, the best times to visit them, and three varied sample itineraries. I like [PREFERENCES]. Which town or area should I stay in, and why? Then play devil's advocate on your own suggestions.
A couple planning Tunisia had ChatGPT and Claude each design a day in the same three cities, then built their own plan from both. ChatGPT's ambitious desert day was too much, but Claude's food tour and two historical detours became highlights.
We're visiting [CITIES] in [COUNTRY] from [DATES]. Design one full day in each city for two adults who enjoy [INTERESTS]. Be realistic about travel times between places and flag anything weather-dependent. Explain why you chose each stop.
One holidaymaker asked ChatGPT for an itinerary based on his and his wife's interests, then to add a rocket launch, then to turn it into a calendar file. After a few failed attempts it produced a working one that they both imported into their phones.
Make me an itinerary for [DESTINATION] on [DATES]. I like [INTERESTS]; my partner likes [INTERESTS]. Add [SPECIAL EVENT]. Then create a calendar file (.ics) with each activity as an event with start and end times, location and a short note, so I can import it into my phone's calendar.
One traveller has ChatGPT pull her holiday plan together: as she adds flight times, accommodation, tickets, free days and wish-list activities, it keeps the itinerary updated and adds restaurant and sightseeing ideas.
Keep a running itinerary for my trip to [DESTINATION] from [DATES]. Here's what's booked so far: [FLIGHTS, HOTEL, TICKETS WITH TIMES]. Things I'd like to do: [LIST]. Lay it out day by day, keep free days free, and suggest restaurants near each day's plans. Each time I send an update, give me the full revised itinerary.
When his luggage went missing for three days in the US, one traveller asked ChatGPT to find the receipts in his email and photos, locate the airline's form, fill it in and submit it. He expects $300 he would otherwise never have claimed.
My checked bag was delayed for [NUMBER] days on [AIRLINE] flight [NUMBER], file reference [PIR/FILE NUMBER]. I bought these essentials: [ITEMS AND PRICES]. Explain what airlines usually reimburse for delayed bags, what receipts I need, and draft the text for the claim form and a covering message.
After JetBlue cancelled his flight at the last minute, one traveller later asked ChatGPT to go and get his refund. He ended up with $866.36 back plus a $100 flight credit.
My flight [FLIGHT NUMBER] on [DATE] was cancelled by [AIRLINE]. I paid [AMOUNT] and [DID/DID NOT] accept an alternative. Tell me what I'm entitled to, then draft a short, firm refund request that quotes my booking reference [REF], asks for a cash refund to my original payment method within a set time, and says what I'll do if they don't respond.
Instead of using a claims company, one traveller used ChatGPT to work out eligibility and write the claim for a delayed Lisbon to Chennai journey, and received €600 from the airline without paying any commission.
My flight [FLIGHT NUMBER] from [DEPARTURE] to [DESTINATION] on [DATE] arrived [HOURS] late at my final destination. The airline gave this reason: [REASON, IF ANY]. Explain whether I'm likely to be entitled to compensation under the rules that apply to this route (e.g. UK261/EU261), what amount, and what evidence I need. Then draft a claim to the airline that I can send through their claims form.
