ToolChatGPT

Facing a seven-week trip taking in Copenhagen, Colorado, Iceland, Edinburgh, London and Switzerland, with glacier hikes, a graduation and a West End show, a travel writer gave ChatGPT each stop, month and activity. It produced a layered packing list she only tweaked slightly, and her husband and son adjusted it for themselves.

Prompt to copy
Make me a packing list for one suitcase for this trip. Consider the weather, temperatures and events at each stop: [CITY, MONTH, NUMBER OF DAYS, ACTIVITIES] for each leg. Focus on layers and items that work in more than one place, list how many of each item to take, and include toiletries, tech and documents. Flag anything I could buy or borrow there instead.

Replace the [PLACEHOLDERS] with your own details before you send it.

How to try it

  1. List every stop with the month, number of days and planned activities.
  2. Paste it into ChatGPT and trim anything you won’t really use or can get on arrival.
  3. Share the list with your travel companions so they can adapt it for themselves.

Planning a winter trip around Europe, a traveller uploaded his list of city pairs and travel days and asked ChatGPT whether a Eurail pass made sense. It helped him choose a 15-day pass over two months, decide which journeys to use it for, and flagged that ferries weren't covered and Italian high-speed trains need €15 seat reservations.
