How to Use AI to Practise a Language by Voice with ChatGPT Voice

Works withChatGPTClaudeGemini

Speaking is the part of learning a language most people avoid. Apps are good for vocabulary, but they rarely make you put a sentence together out loud, and finding a patient conversation partner at the right level isn’t easy.

AI voice assistants can fill that gap. ChatGPT Voice, Gemini Live and Claude’s voice mode let you hold a spoken conversation at your own pace, as many times as you like, without feeling embarrassed. This guide shows you how to set one up as a speaking partner, practise real situations such as ordering food or checking into a hotel, and come away with a short list of mistakes to work on. Allow 15 minutes a session.

Quick answer: Start a text chat that sets the language, your level and a scene, and asks the AI to speak simply and correct you briefly. Then switch to voice, talk for 10 to 15 minutes, and finish by asking for a summary of your mistakes with more natural phrasings. Review the transcript afterwards and bring your mistake list to the next session.

What you’ll need

  • The ChatGPT app (or Gemini or Claude) on your phone, with microphone access allowed
  • Headphones, especially if you practise in public
  • A rough idea of your level, such as complete beginner, can order food, or can hold a basic conversation
  • A notebook or notes app for your mistake list
  • 10 to 15 minutes a day

Step-by-step: practise speaking with AI

  1. Set up the session in text first. Paste prompt 1 into a new chat with your language, level and a scene. Setting the rules in writing makes the AI stick to them better.
  2. Switch to voice. Tap the voice icon in ChatGPT (or start Gemini Live) and say hello in the language you’re learning. You can interrupt at any time and ask it to slow down or say something more simply.
  3. Role-play a real situation. Practise things you’ll actually do: ordering in a café, asking for directions, small talk with a neighbour or a job interview (prompt 2).
  4. Keep corrections short. Ask the AI to give the correct version in one line and carry on, so the conversation keeps flowing. If it stops correcting you, just remind it.
  5. Ask for a summary. At the end, say “Please summarise my mistakes”. You’ll get a list of what you said, a more natural version and why (prompt 3).
  6. Review the transcript. Open the chat afterwards and read the conversation. Copy useful phrases and corrections into your notes or flashcards.
  7. Build on it next time. Start each new session by pasting your mistake list and asking the AI to work those patterns into the conversation (prompt 4).

Copy-paste prompts

1. Set up a speaking partner

Please be my speaking partner for [LANGUAGE]. My level: [FOR EXAMPLE, I CAN INTRODUCE MYSELF AND ORDER FOOD, BUT I STRUGGLE WITH THE PAST TENSE]. Scene: [FOR EXAMPLE, CHECKING INTO A HOTEL AND ASKING ABOUT RESTAURANTS NEARBY]. Play the other person. Speak in short, simple sentences at my level, one or two at a time, then ask me a question. When I make a mistake, say the correct sentence in one line and carry on. If you didn't understand me, say so rather than guessing.

2. Role-play a real-life situation

Let's role-play in [LANGUAGE]. You are a [WAITER / RECEPTIONIST / SHOP ASSISTANT / INTERVIEWER] in [CITY OR COUNTRY]. Use the natural phrases a local would use, but keep to my level, [LEVEL]. Stay in character until I say "stop", then tell me three phrases I should learn from the conversation.

3. Summarise my mistakes

Please summarise this practice session. Give me a table with what I said, a more natural way to say it and a short reason. Then list the 3 grammar points I should review and 5 useful new words or phrases from today, with English translations.

4. Start the next session from my mistakes

Here are the mistakes from my last session: [PASTE LIST]. Let's have a 10-minute conversation in [LANGUAGE] about [TOPIC] that gives me natural chances to use these correctly. Correct me briefly if I repeat any of them.

Recommended tools

  • ChatGPT Voice: natural, fast conversation on the app and the web; you can see the full transcript afterwards and change voices in settings.
  • Gemini Live: Google’s voice conversation mode, useful if you already use Gemini and Google apps.
  • Claude: its voice mode on the mobile app works well for calm, structured practice and clear explanations of grammar.

Tips and mistakes to avoid

  • Don’t rely on it for pronunciation. AI mostly hears your words, not the fine details of your sounds. Record yourself and compare with native audio from your course.
  • Little and often wins. Ten minutes a day beats an hour once a week.
  • Make it speak more slowly. Say “slower, please” or “simpler words, please” in the language you’re learning; it’s good practice too.
  • Mix in real people. AI is a great warm-up, but conversation classes or language exchanges add things it can’t, like real accents and culture.
  • Keep personal details out. Don’t share your address, phone number or other private information during role-plays.
  • Check its language. AI is usually right about everyday phrases but can make mistakes with grammar rules or regional usage. Check anything important with a teacher or a good dictionary.

FAQ

Is ChatGPT Voice free?

You can use ChatGPT Voice on the free plan, with usage limits. Paid plans give you more time and access to more advanced voice options.

Can ChatGPT correct my pronunciation?

Only roughly. It can tell if it didn’t understand a word, but it isn’t designed to give detailed feedback on individual sounds. Use recordings and native audio for that.

What level do I need to start?

Beginners can use it, but it helps to know some basic phrases first. Ask the AI to use very short sentences and to give you the English translation when you’re stuck.

Which languages does it support?

ChatGPT Voice and Gemini Live understand and speak many languages, including all the major European and Asian languages. Quality is best for widely spoken ones.
