Told by a painter to 'just buy two drums', one homeowner asked Gemini instead, and it worked from coverage of about 10 square metres per litre per coat. He bought two 20-litre buckets anyway and was left with roughly 15 litres of expensive paint going to waste.
I'm painting [ROOMS OR AREAS]. The walls measure roughly [WIDTH x HEIGHT FOR EACH WALL], minus [NUMBER] doors and [NUMBER] windows. I plan [NUMBER] coats of [PAINT TYPE], and the tin says it covers [COVERAGE PER LITRE]. Work out the total area, how many litres I need with a small margin, and the cheapest mix of tin sizes to buy. Show your working.
Replace the [PLACEHOLDERS] with your own details before you send it.
How to try it
- Measure each wall and note doors and windows; check the coverage figure on the tin.
- Give Gemini the numbers with the prompt and check its sums.
- Buy a little over the estimate rather than double, and keep the receipt in case you can return unopened tins.

Grow new plants from broken stems with Claude’s help
After hearing that broken petunia stems could be replanted, a Hacker News user asked Claude how to do it. Following its advice, they started several new petunia plants that are now thriving, and joke that their petunias are basically immortal.
A stem has broken off my [PLANT], and I'd like to grow a new plant from it. I'm in [CLIMATE/REGION], it's [MONTH], and I have [WHAT YOU HAVE: POTS, COMPOST, ROOTING POWDER, A SUNNY WINDOWSILL]. Give me simple step-by-step instructions for taking and rooting the cutting, how to tell if it's working, common mistakes, and when to move it outside or into a bigger pot.
Get honest style advice on a room from a photo with Claude
One user uploaded a photo of their living room and asked Claude for style advice. Its first suggestion was, more or less, to try putting their stuff away first, which they admitted was fair.
Here's a photo of my [ROOM]. I'd like it to feel more [E.G. CALM, COSY, SPACIOUS] on a budget of [BUDGET]. Be honest: what are the three changes that would make the biggest difference, starting with free ones like decluttering or rearranging furniture?
Create a Christmas morning photo of Santa in your own living room with Gemini
On Christmas Day a family asked Gemini's Nano Banana image model to create a picture of Santa delivering presents in their own living room. They were most impressed that it even set the photo's timestamp to 25 December at 6:39am.
Here's a photo of our living room. Edit it so Santa Claus is quietly placing presents under [THE TREE / BY THE FIREPLACE], as if caught on camera early on Christmas morning. Keep the room exactly as it is, with soft, slightly dim early-morning light, and make it look like a real, slightly grainy phone photo rather than a cartoon.
