Shape a eulogy from your own memories with ChatGPT

ToolChatGPT

When his 99-year-old father died, a blogger didn't ask ChatGPT to write the eulogy. He gave it his own stories and asked where each one fitted, what repeated and what sounded unnatural, which helped him group the memories into themes and tighten the speech while keeping it in his own voice.

Prompt to copy
I'm writing a eulogy for my [RELATIONSHIP, E.G. DAD] and I want it to sound like me, not like AI. Here are my memories and stories: [PASTE YOUR NOTES]. Don't write the speech for me. Instead, group these into 3-5 themes about who they were, suggest an order, point out anything that repeats, and flag sentences that are too long to say out loud. The speech should last about [MINUTES] minutes.

Replace the [PLACEHOLDERS] with your own details before you send it.

How to try it

  1. Write down your memories first, in your own words, before you open ChatGPT.
  2. Ask it to act as an editor: where stories fit, what to cut and what sounds awkward when spoken, rather than asking for a finished speech.
  3. Read every suggestion aloud and only keep the ones that still sound like you.

She and her husband then edited every note, had some translated for non-English-speaking guests, and printed them into cards.

Get unstuck on a personal book with Grok’s writing prompts

One user had spent five years thinking about writing a book about losing their mum to Alzheimer's. Grok's brainstorming and writing prompts helped them work out an outline and ideas to make it more readable, and they made more progress in a week than in those five years. They won't use it to write the book itself.
